Currently at Roselea, there are 360 students making up 15 separate classes. At Roselea, a strong professional relationship between parents, students and staff is actively encouraged to enhance all aspects of learning. Many parents contribute their skills and support in a variety of areas including assistance with class activities, sport, library, canteen, excursions and fundraising.
Roselea Public School has a growing reputation as a community centred school in which, not only academic excellence and life long thinking skills are valued and pursued, but the development of healthy relationships, acceptance and tolerance have become key features. The particular focus of the school is:To strive for excellence in education and to care for all students in a dynamic learning environment. This focus is effectively demonstrated by the way in which both able bodied students and those with a physical disability learn along side any with a non-English speaking background in a caring, positive, harmonious and non-discriminatory environment.
Teachers at Roselea Public School actively promote in students racial tolerance and celebration of difference. This ensures an inclusive, positive school community and a learning and working environment free of racism. While 40% of Roselea students come from language backgrounds other than English, school harmony is clearly present and actively promoted through the on-going celebration and valuing of similarities and differences.
Through incorporating aspects of the school's Learning to Learn program, the bonds of friendship and cross cultural understanding have been promoted and strengthened. Activities based on units of study such as 'Traditions and Heritage' , 'Being Australian' or 'Understanding Ourselves' (as well as the annual Harmony Day event) further enabled all teachers and students to recognise and value backgrounds and cultures other than their own.
Through the community language program, students from Kindergarten to Year 2 are introduced to the Chinese language and culture. As well as these lessons, language support continues for Mandarin speakers from Kindergarten to Year 6.
The special leaning needs of students from backgrounds other than English have been recognised and met through the provision of an English as a Second Language (ESL) program four days a week. This is supplemented by the appointment of an additional part-time ESL teacher to work specifically with non-English speaking students newly arrived in Australia. Support is provided for these students both in class and in small groups on a withdrawal basis.
