Integration
- Integration is an Essential component of the Special Education Program at Roselea
Integration is actively pursued at every appropriate opportunity throughout a student's time at Roselea. Our students in the Support Unit regularly interact and learn with their peers in the rest of the school, not only to develop their own interpersonal skills but also to educate their peers and raise awareness of some of the issues concerning people with a disability.
- ‘Reverse’ integration with small groups of mainstream students working in the Support Unit alongside their peers
Reverse integration provides mainstream students with the opportunity to experience learning in the Support Unit. Students may reverse integrate for a variety of lessons, such as specialised music, art, cooking, english or mathematics groups. Reverse Integration has proven to be beneficial for all students involved as it allows students from the mainstream to participate in focused learning activities in a small group environment as well as getting to know their peers in the Support Unit better. It also assists students in the Support Unit to feel more at home in familiar environments when interacting with their peers.
- Involvement in whole school activities
Students in the Support Unit at Roselea benefit from a higher teacher to student ratio in the classroom as well as playing a part of the student body in grade and whole school activities. Students are able, where appropriate, to attend in-school activities as well as school outings and excursions with peers of similar ages. Every effort is made to ensure that students in the Support Unit receive every opportunity that their peers are entitled to.
