Literacy and Numeracy

Literacy

The Literacy policy and other guidelines are based on the English K-6 Syllabus and assist the implementation of this syllabus. In the primary classroom, the literacy demands of Key Learning Areas other than English also form part of the total reading, writing and talking and listening program.

School based assessments in literacy

Students at Roselea Public School have their literacy knowledge and skills mapped closely, particularly during their early years. This information is gathered regularly and informs our quality teaching and learning programs and allows us to give specific feedback to parents.

Literacy skills are regularly assessed through an on-going process of individual testing of sight words and phonic levels, standardised tests, observations, anecdotal records and analysis of year to year tracking information. Kindergarten students engage in the following programs: Ants in the Apple phonic program, Roselea Phonic Levels 1 - 10, Oral Reading Fluency partner reading, daily oral reading of home reader levelled texts and the Rainbow Reading program.

In addition to regular class literacy activities, additional Stage 2 and 3 programs for students needing support include Multilit and Rainbow Reading. Additional resources are available for developing readers in all stages of learning to provide them with high interest reading material at their identified ability level.

Most Roselea students achieve scores above the expected levels in the Oral Reading Fluency tests.

Numeracy

The Mathematics K-6 syllabus emphasises the strands of Number, Patterns and Algebra, Data, Measurement and Space and Geometry, together with the process of Working Mathematically.
