In addition to these teaching staff, Roselea Public School also has 4 Administrative staff and 7 School Learning Support Officers.
The 'Chaplains in Schools' program was an initiative of the Federal Liberal Government which allocated $90 million for the funding of chaplaincy positions in Australian schools from 2007 to 2009, with up to $20,000 each year being made available per school on application (ie to employ a two day a week chaplain). This initiative has been honoured by the newly elected government, although there is no guarantee that it will continue beyond 2009.
A school chaplain is a person approved and appointed to provide spiritual, emotional and pastoral support and welfare to complement other programs and activities within the school. Many independent schools and secondary Government schools now have chaplains. Reports from Principals in schools with a chaplain indicate the benefits of having an additional professional on staff available to complement existing but stretched couselling services by offering informal pastoral care, welfare and support to staff, students and their families.
Chaplains function as resource people to schools. They require the knowledge, attributes and skills that allow them to respect all students and the religious, cultural or other backgrounds from which they come. Our chaplain here at Roselea is also a trained teacher and, therefore, could develop relationships and be a resource to the school in the following day-to-day ways:
