School Chaplain

The 'Chaplains in Schools' program was an initiative of the Federal Liberal Government which allocated $90 million for the funding of chaplaincy positions in Australian schools from 2007 to 2009, with up to $20,000 each year being made available per school on application (ie to employ a two day a week chaplain). This initiative has been honoured by the newly elected government, although there is no guarantee that it will continue beyond 2009.

What is a School Chaplain?

A school chaplain is a person approved and appointed to provide spiritual, emotional and pastoral support and welfare to complement other programs and activities within the school. Many independent schools and secondary Government schools now have chaplains. Reports from Principals in schools with a chaplain indicate the benefits of having an additional professional on staff available to complement existing but stretched couselling services by offering informal pastoral care, welfare and support to staff, students and their families.

Role and Responsibilities of the Roselea School Chaplain

Chaplains function as resource people to schools. They require the knowledge, attributes and skills that allow them to respect all students and the religious, cultural or other backgrounds from which they come. Our chaplain here at Roselea is also a trained teacher and, therefore, could develop relationships and be a resource to the school in the following day-to-day ways:

  • as a role model for students to promote values such as trust, tolerance, respect, honesty, courtesy
  • as a support person for students, parents and staff (including the student leadership team, the Learning Support team and the School Counsellor)
  • as a teacher of values education, resilience (Bounce Back), leadership skills, anti bullying, peer support, drug education, child protection, support/remedial/ESL programs, Harmony Day organisation etc.
  • as a reference point for teachers and students concerning pastoral, welfare or spiritual issues
  • as a facilitator of voluntary groups for students during unscheduled school time (including the SRC)
  • as a leader/supporter of community-related activities (including the community carols' night)
  • as an emergency relief teacher and playground supervisor
  • as an additional teacher taking small groups, excurions, leadership training activities, relieving class teachers etc.
  • as a source of information to parents via a regular brief Newsletter item: From the Chaplain (including description of role, contact details etc.)
